Later this week, Secondo and Terzo's school will be going on a field trip. The day will include some kind of nature walk, and then the kids will go fishing.
Secondo: "MOM!"
Me: "WHAT!"
Secondo: "On our nature trip, we are going FISHING! I'm so excited!"
Me: "That's great!"
Secondo: "Fishing is the only thing I've EVER wanted to do."
As a lady whose own dreams have all crashed and burned, it's kind of good to hear that he longs for something that is actually attainable. But once that fishing trip comes and goes, how will he go on?
hahaha, right? :)
ReplyDeleteYeah. I'm worried that he is going to want to go ALL THE TIME. Because I hate fishing. Did I mention that I am one of the parent chaperones on this trip? I "won" the drawing at school to get to go. No word yet on what second prize was.
DeleteEWWWW do you have to put the worms on?
ReplyDeleteDear God, I hope not. As with every other new experience in France, I have no freaking idea what to expect, and I probably won't understand what's going on when it actually happens.
DeleteI hate fishing with my kids! I have to do all the gross work (putting the hotdog ON the hook, then taking the fish OFF the hook). I won't go anymore and my kids make me feel like I'm robbing them of the best childhood ever, lol. But I'm standing my ground!
ReplyDeleteHot dogs? There are hot dogs involved in this sport? Oh my God, this gets worse and worse!
Delete"As a lady whose own dreams have all crashed and burned..." I got this far, then I had to pour myself a drink, because OH MY GOD I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. *sniffles*
ReplyDelete: (
DeleteI'd have a drink with you if I wasn't working all night. Maybe tomorrow.
Okay, I'm going to go contra here. As a guy with grown kids, I gotta say I'm happy my sons fish. It gets them away from computers, phones, demands, traffic jams, etc. etc. We went together when they were growing up and it seemed to "take." Lord knows, all the mistakes I made as a father, it turns out about the best thing I ever did was sit them down in a boat and show them which end of the pole to hold onto. So...take courage, fishing has its positives. Believe me, it does. If nothing else, they learn to sit still, be quiet and have patience. And sometimes, you can bring home supper. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, I am TOTALLY in favor of THEM fishing! What I'm anti- is me having to fish. You are exactly, 100% right, in my humble opinion, about the bonding opportunities between boys and their dads on the fishing boat (or dock, or bank of the river). All of my male relatives fish (although they are not so good at the actual catching) and it always seemed to me that it was more about their camaraderie than anything else.
DeleteSo in conclusion, I am totally in favor of X taking the boys fishing. : )
Tell him to get off his duff and get moving! :-) we've outvoted him.
DeleteWow, a preschool class fishing?! That's one brave teacher :)
ReplyDeleteI have an even HUGER respect for teachers (including you!) after going on that trip. I don't know how they do it. They should get paid a million dollars a year.
DeleteAww thanks! I have to be honest though, I don't think I'm that brave. I tip my hat to that teacher :)
DeletePS Would you tell the Governor that for me?
I am more than content to let the males fish and sit on the dock and read. Working all night? That sounds awful. What kind of second shift job are you doing?
ReplyDeleteI write briefs for other lawyers. After six months of begging, I have finally convinced my husband that we need some part-time child care, so once we have that in place, the workdays will no longer start at 9pm!
DeleteA fishing trip? Really? Wow. Uh, how did that go? I am almost afraid to ask!
ReplyDeleteWell, here's how I described it on Facebook:
Delete"When X asked if I wanted to volunteer to chaperone the school field trip, I probably should have asked for more details before agreeing to do it. Because I was thinking we would go to the Louvre, where I would run into Carla Bruni and we would maybe make a playdate for the babies. I was not thinking that we would take a trip to the local swamp-and-mosquito-hatchery in 90 degree weather."
So, uh, not well.
You went fishing and never came back
ReplyDeleteI know! Work has been completely crazy. : (
